'Oh so happy we will be!' Papageno is singing out his Heart's hope, certain of a happy future with his beloved. Mozart's ‘Magic Flute' is one of my favourite operas and as I am writing this, it is playing near full volume. Papageno dancing lightly, full of open heart and naive expectation. And then, the Queen of the Night with the line, ‘Hell's revenge boils in my Heart.' Her heart dripping with the dark blood of pain, betrayal, severed from any emotion but rage. Love. Or, at least our earth bound idea of Love.
Venus. We all have one. Somewhere in your Birth Chart, Venus, radiant and glorious, sits there. She is the Goddess of Love, pleasure and creative expression. She tells us who we love and why we love. She tells us what music we enjoy. She tells us why we like certain clothes and styles. And she tells us what paintings and other Art forms move us from our ordinary day. Your Venus is power-full. It is our fear and distortion of ourselves and others that keep us apart from our Venus. She gives us many chances to uncover our distortions. And she sings us songs and tells us stories on how we can love more courageously. Her songs can be heard anywhere and at anytime. Her stories include our Heart's greatest fears and triumphs.
In a Birth Chart, your Venus will never change. But through life and love, you will come to know her more intimately. Venus, like all the Planets, keeps moving. As they wander through the ageless constellations, they 'visit' various areas of your life. In your Birth Chart, these areas are called, 'Houses.' Each House governs every aspect of life. From the profound to the practical. These Houses cover everything from neckties and driveways to Spiritual Retreats and mystical happenings. The length of time that Venus stays in a particular House is usually four weeks. For example, she may visit an area that rules your home. So for about four weeks, you will be inspired to decorate your space. This is a simple example but my editor will get cranky if I go on too long!
Every few years, Venus slows down, allowing her to spend more time in one or two areas of your life. Right now, Venus is in Capricorn and due to this slower movement, she will remain in Capricorn until March 5th. If you know what House Capricorn rules, then you will know how long Venus will be visiting that area of your life. For part of this time, she will be retrograde. And this is when Venus retreats.
From December 21/2013 until January 30/2014, Venus will be retrograde. Let us have a look at what to expect when the songs and stories of Venus grows faint for awhile. We will look at the areas of life that Venus governs.
Love: If you are in a solid committed relationship, you can expect to have old emotional issues resurface. Some of these could be serious and some could be light. Venus retrograde calls on us to re-examine our relationships. Even if it is hurtful, this is a healthy and helpful situation.
If you are single, old loves may come knocking on your door. In keeping with the theme of Venus retrograde, this situation is meant for you to re-examine. This is tough to say but Love, at this time is not meant to be a re-igniting of an old relationship. Venus is standing back and asking you to look deeply at the emotional issues that brought the relationship to the end in the first place. New relationships, at this time tend to be quite Karmic but, again they do not last. It is important to remember that, who we attract is a reflection of our understanding of Love. While Venus is in retreat, we are afforded the opportunity to truly explore this understanding. The Goddess of Love will stand back and wait for us to gain or regain this wisdom.
In general, we will hear more than the usual number of break-ups. Sadly, a number of them will be couples who we may have admired for their long-standing commitment.
Music: Music from our past receives more playtime during this period. Music that was created in the past but never received public attention may gain some short-lived popularity.
Clothing and Jewellery: Items bought at this time will either not be to taste or not measure up to desired quality. Vintage and used clothing stores, however are treasure spots during a Venus Retrograde.
Creative: If you create songs, poems, pottery, photographs, new inspiration may be difficult to muster. But what about what you created a month ago, a year ago, ten years ago? When Venus is retrograde, she shows us that what we created in the past, now needs another look. This is an excellent time to re-visit long ago and not so long ago creative inspirations.
What will you do during Venus retrograde? Consider a Heart and Art retreat. This does not mean shutting down your Heart for a number of weeks. A Heart and Art retreat may involve a loving look at Venus in all her manifestations. Write a love poem to past loves. Write a love poem to your heart. Forgive self and others. Get creative!
When Venus re-emerges from her retreat on January 31, she will expect us to have learned a few things. We can feel a mad rush of creativity. Wiser, we take better care of who we share our precious hearts with and how we can better love all our loves. When Venus returns on January 30/2014, hopefully we can feel compassion for the Queen of the Night's sad, fearful heart and cheer on Papageno's naive but wild open heart.
